Ο Ρανταμές είναι ερωτευμένος με την Αΐντα, μία Αιθιοπίδα σκλάβα (στην πραγματικότητα πριγκίπισσα της Αιθιοπίας) στην εκδούλευση της Αμνέριδος, κόρης του Φαραώ. Όμως και η Άμνερις είναι ερωτευμένη με τον Ρανταμές, κάτι που θα δημιουργήσει προβλήματα στους δύο ερωτευμένους. Ο Ρανταμές θα επιστρέψει νικητής από τον πόλεμο. Θα ακολουθήσει το «Εμβατήριο του Θριάμβου», μια από τις διασημότερες σκηνές στην ιστορία του λυρικού θεάτρου. Εδώ ο λαός της Αιγύπτου τραγουδά: «Δόξα στην Αίγυπτο και την Ίσιδα / που προστατεύει την ιερή της γη. Ας ψάλλουμε ύμνους γιορτής / στον Βασιλιά που κυβερνά το Δέλτα / Δόξα! Δόξα! Δόξα! / Δόξα στον Βασιλιά». Αργότερα δε συμπληρώνει: «Ελάτε τιμωροί πολεμιστές / ελάτε και χαρείτε μαζί μας / Ας ρίξουμε δάφνες και λουλούδια / στο μονοπάτι των ηρώων».

Όταν ζητηθεί από τον Ρανταμές μια χάρη ως νικητής, εκείνος θα ζητήσει να απελευθερωθούν όλοι οι Αιθίοπες αιχμάλωτοι. Ο Φαραώ θα πραγματοποιήσει την επιθυμία του, με εξαίρεση τον Αμανόρσο, που έχει ομολογήσει ότι είναι ο πατέρας της Αΐντα (αλλά όχι και βασιλιάς της Αιθιοπίας). Θα του προσφέρει δε, το χέρι της Αμνέριδος και την διαδοχή στον θρόνο της Αιγύπτου.

Πεισμένη από τον πατέρα της, που θα της μιλήσει για τα βάσανα του λαού της, η Αΐντα θα ζητήσει από τον Ρανταμές να της αποκαλύψει τα στρατηγικά του σχέδια. Εκείνος άθελα θα γίνει προδότης, αλλά η Άμνερις που καιροφυλακτεί στην όχθη του Νείλου, θα τον καταγγείλει. Όμως μετανοιωμένη, θα προσπαθήσει να τον σώσει. Αλλά οι ιερείς είναι αμείλικτοι: ο Ρανταμές θα πρέπει να ταφεί ζωντανός στον ναό του Ήφαιστου. Στον ναό όμως έχει κρυφτεί και η Αΐντα για να ταφεί μαζί με τον αγαπημένο της.

When the narrator first meets Tyler, Tyler declares that he is a soap salesman, although Tyler has various other occupations including a night-time movie projectionist and a waiter. Tyler, however, most identifies himself with the job of selling soap, thus lending weight to the symbolic importance played by soap in the movie. Tyler calls soap “the foundation of civilization” and tells the narrator that “the first soap was made from the ashes of heroes”. He also uses lye, a chemical ingredient of soap, to introduce the narrator to the pain of “premature enlightenment.” In this role, soap is a symbol of purification and cleanliness, of a culture lacking the hypocrisy and fraudulence of contemporary culture.

During this time Tyler has also begun to teach Jack the art of soap making. Jack and Tyler begin making soap from human fat that they have obtained from the discard bins of liposuction clinics and selling this ‘primo’ soap to the upper class department stores in their city. Both Tyler and Jack find delight in ‘selling rich women their fat asses back to them’. Soap is a very important symbol in Fight Club, as Tyler explains that soap ultimately symbolizes heroism, and human sacrifice. This becomes known in the following excerpt (page 76/77/78):

“In ancient history…human sacrifices were made on a hill above a river…The sacrifices were made and the bodies were burned on a pyre…After hundreds of people were sacrificed and burned…a thick white discharge crept from the alter, downhill to the river…Rain fell on the burnt pyre year after year, and year after year people were burned, and the rain seeped through the wood ashes to become a solution of lye, and the lye combined with the fat of the sacrifices, and a thick white discharge of soap crept out from the base of the altar and crept downhill toward the river…Where the soap fell into the river…after a thousand years of killing people and rain, the ancient people found their clothes got cleaner if they washed them at that spot…It was right to kill those people…You have to see…how the first soap was made of heroes…think about animals in product testing. Think about the monkeys shot into space. Without their pain and sacrifice…we would have nothing.”

Tyler shows how soap was obtained through the suffering and sacrifice of humanity and that this is ultimately how all human progress is obtained. He wants Jack to realize that even though this may be disturbing, it is a fact of life.

Rather than being made from the “ashes of heroes”, soap is made from “selling rich women their own fat asses.” The fact that Tyler is a salesman for this product represents Jack’s subservience to this culture. Fight Club is founded as a way for men to regain their primitive instinct that culture tries to wash off. In that soap represents both the purifying and effacing tendencies of civilization.

The date of soap’s discovery is unknown. It may have been some time during the Late Bronze Age, the 12th century B.C., in Mycenaen Greece, or pre-Republic Rome, circa 700 B.C., or sometime in the 9th century B.C. when Hinduism originated in the hill country of India. It is known that mankind stumbled upon soap in an age when animal and possibly human sacrifices represented a form of worship. The pivotal event likely took place on a hilltop near a lake or river.

The discoverers were filthy and vermin-ridden, and yet they liked clean clothes. They were also very devout. Their devotion expressed itself in ritual sacrifice of a prized animal, a captive enemy, or a member of the tribe who had committed a crime. Human or animal, the victim was trussed up and carried beneath poles as the group climbed to the top of a hill. At the summit, worshippers lowered the luckless wretch on to a makeshift altar surrounded by kindling wood that was set ablaze. The throat of the burning creature was slit so that its blood could flow into the flames, generating a crimson steam that wafted its way heavenwards to the gods. The history of animal and human sacrifice has been told before and at greater length. Only two byproducts of this sanguine piety concern us here: the fat and ashes produced by the flames.

These crucial ingredients left behind at the altar of some long forgotten deity would turn out to be, if not a gift from the gods, a result of man’s belief in them. The mixture of burned fat and wood ash is what distant heirs of that devout tribe today call soap. While men placated angry gods at the hilltop altar, their women folk down below washed clothes on a river bank at the base of the hill. Rainwater carried the fat and ashes down the slope and into the water.

Prehistoric washerwomen experienced the same thing that happens every time we pour detergent into the dishwasher or soak in a bubble bath. The ladies who laundered didn’t realize the enduring significance of their discovery, but they did notice that their clothes and hands soaked in rainwater containing fat and ash were exponentially cleaner. By-products of animal sacrifice created the first soap. Although the ingredients and method of manufacture have been improved upon over millennia, the same chemical reaction (called saponification) that occurred on the most important wash day of unrecorded history provided the cleanser the civilized world has used ever since.

Στο βίντεο εξιστορείται η προσπάθεια φτωχών βραζιλιάνων να ζήσουν βουτώντας στα ανοιχτά για αστακούς.  Οι περισσότεροι από αυτούς είναι χαζοί σαν εμένα και δεν ξέρουν ότι η έλλειψη οξυγόνου σκοτώνει και για λίγα δολλάρια βουτάνε στο κενό για να ζήσουν.  Όταν δεν έχεις τα στοιχειώδη βουτάς στην άβυσσο.  Πέρνεις ένα δολλάριο το κομμάτι και ο αστακός σερβίρεται 100 δολλάρια το κομμάτι στο Maimi.

Η υποξία είναι χοντρικά η πτώση του οξυγόνου στον οργανισμό μας κάτω από τα ανεκτά επίπεδα. Aς δούμε πώς μπορεί να συμβεί. Tο οξυγόνο είναι αυτό που επιτρέπει την παραγωγή ενέργειας από χημικές αντιδράσεις -που λέγονται καύσεις- στο σώμα μας.

Xωρίς αυτό δεν μπορούν να γίνουν καύσεις, με τον ίδιο τρόπο που δεν μπορεί να μείνει αναμμένη η φλόγα του κεριού κάτω από ένα ποτήρι. Mόλις το οξυγόνο σωθεί θα σβήσει. Tο διοξείδιο του άνθρακα είναι το προϊόν της καύσης. Eτσι λοιπόν, όταν αναπνέουμε παίρνουμε οξυγόνο με τον ατμοσφαιρικό αέρα, το χρησιμοποιούμε για τις καύσεις μας και παράγουμε διοξείδιο του άνθρακα, το οποίο απομακρύνεται με την εκπνοή. Όσο πιο έντονα κινούμαστε τόσο πιο γρήγορα καταναλώνουμε οξυγόνο/παράγουμε διοξείδιο.

Eννοείται πως όταν βρισκόμαστε σε άπνοια έχουμε στη διάθεσή μας το οξυγόνο που πήραμε στην τελευταία μας ανάσα και όταν βρισκόμαστε σε ελεύθερη κατάδυση με αυτό πρέπει να βολευτούμε, μέχρι να επιστρέψουμε στην επιφάνεια. Eννοείται, επίσης, πως μέχρι τότε δεν μπορούμε να ξεφορτωθούμε το διοξείδιο που συνεχώς αυξάνει.

Aντίθετα με ό,τι θα περίμενε κανείς, αυτό που δίνει το σήμα, το καμπανάκι, για τη ρήξη της άπνοιας δεν είναι το οξυγόνο που μειώνεται, αλλά το διοξείδιο που αυξάνει. Aυτή η αύξηση δεν γίνεται ανεκτή από τον οργανισμό, ο οποίος αρχίζει να διαμαρτύρεται, σαν αίσθημα δυσφορίας στην αρχή και, αν το παρακάνουμε, με τους διαφραγματικούς σπασμούς. Aν κάποιος ανέφερε τη φράση «η νόσος των δυτών στην ελεύθερη» πριν από μερικά χρόνια θα τον έπαιρναν με τις πέτρες! Bλέπετε παλαιότερα θεωρείτο πως μόνο στην αυτόνομη κατάδυση μπορεί να συμβεί κάτι τέτοιο. Aς δούμε λοιπόν πώς έχουν τα πράγματα. Oι πρώτες αναφορές στη νόσο των δυτών στη χώρα μας έρχονται από τους σφουγγαράδες της Kαλύμνου και της Σύμης και μάλιστα όχι τους γυμνούς δύτες (αυτούς με τη σκανταλόπετρα), αφού αυτοί βουτούσαν με ελεύθερη κατάδυση (αν κι αυτοί θα μπορούσαν να την πάθουν).

Mιλάμε γι’ αυτούς που βουτούσαν με σκάφανδρα και ο αέρας τους ερχόταν από το καΐκι με κομπρεσσέρ (τα πρώτα ήταν χειροκίνητα) και λεγόταν «μηχανικοί». Aυτοί που τους «χτυπούσε η αρρώστια» πέθαιναν ή έμεναν παράλυτοι (αναφερόμαστε στις βαρύτερες μορφές της νόσου). Xαρακτηριστικό είναι ότι στην Kάλυμνο υπάρχει ο περίφημος χορός του μηχανικού, όπου ο «χτυπημένος» δύτης προσπαθεί, υποβασταζόμενος από τους συντρόφους του, να χορέψει.

Σε επίπεδο φυσιολογίας συμβαίνουν τα εξής: ο ατμοσφαιρικός αέρας περιέχει εκτός από 21% οξυγόνο και άζωτο σε ποσοστό περίπου 78%, το οποίο όμως δεν το χρησιμοποιούμε πουθενά. Tο άζωτο, όμως, αν η κατάδυση κρατήσει πολύ και αναλόγως το βάθος, διαλύεται στο αίμα με τη μορφή πολύ μικρών φυσαλίδων, οι οποίες στην ανάδυση διογκώνονται και προκαλούν εμβολές (αποφράσσουν δηλαδή, μικρά αιμοφόρα αγγεία).

Aνάλογα με την περιοχή και την έκταση της βλάβης έρχονται ελαφρά συμπτώματα π.χ. πόνος στις αρθρώσεις ή παράλυση ή και ο θάνατος ακόμα.

The crosses on the Hill were first mentioned in written chronicles in 1850, but it is believed that the first crosses were put by the relatives of the victims of the rebellion in 1831 as the tsarist government did not allow the families to honor their deads properly. Crosses of the kind became more numerous after the other rebellion in 1863.

In the beginning of the 20th century the Hill of Crosses was already widely known as a sacral place. In addition to many pilgrims visiting, it was also a place for Masses and devotions. The Hill of Crosses became of special importance during Soviet times – this was the place of anonymous but surprising persistence to the regime. The Soviet government considered the crosses and the hill a hostile and harmful symbol. In 1961 wooden crosses were broken and burnt, metal ones used as scrap metal and stone and concrete crosses were broken and buried. The hill itself was many times destroyed with bulldozers. During the 1973–1975 period about half a thousand crosses used to be demolished each year without even trying to do this secretly. Later the tactics became more subtle: crosses were demolished as having no artistic value, different “epidemics” were announced forbidding people to come into the region or the roads were blocked by police. The Hill was guarded by both the Soviet army and KGB. In 1978 and 1979 there were some attempts to flood the territory. Despite all these endeavors to stop people from visiting the Hill, crosses would reappear after each night.

After the political change in 1988 the status of the Hill of Crosses changed completely – it became both a Lithuanian and a world phenomenon. It gained a world wide fame after the visit of the Pope John Paul II on September 7, 1993.

Δεν κατοικεί σε καλύβα όπως οι άλλοι χωρικοί, αλλά σε σπιτάκι που βρίσκεται πάνω σε δένδρο. Όνειρό του είναι να τραγουδήσει στο Ολυμπιακό Στάδιο της Λουτέτιας (Παρισιού). Πήρε το όνομά του από τον Τάνταλο, γιο του Δία, ο οποίος είχε καταδικαστεί να διψά συνέχεια γιατί το νερό χανόταν όταν έσκυβε για να πιει. Το ταντάλιο δημιουργήθηκε μετά την αξιοθαύμαστη προσπάθεια που κατέβαλε ο Σουηδός χημικός Άντερς Έκεμπεργκ για να το παρασκευάσει σε καθαρή μορφή, δεδομένου ότι προσβάλλεται πολύ δύσκολα από οξέα.

Ακριβώς χάρη στην εξαιρετική του αντοχή στα οξέα και στη συμβατότητά του με τους ιστούς του σώματος χρησιμοποιείται στα χειρουργικά, στα οφθαλμιατρικά και στα οδοντιατρικά εργαλεία, όπως και στις πλάκες για τη σύνδεση των οστών στα κατάγματα. Το οξείδιό του χρησιμοποιείται σε φακούς ειδικούς για την αεροφωτογραφία.

Με ταντάλιο κατασκευάζονται επίσης οι πυκνωτές που ρυθμίζουν την τάση στα κινητά τηλέφωνα. Μάλιστα η χρήση του σ’ αυτό τον τομέα ανέβασε την τιμή του, που φτάνει σήμερα στα 516,45 ευρώ το κιλό. Στη φύση το ταντάλιο είναι πολύ σπάνιο στοιχείο. Το μεγαλύτερο μέρος του προέρχεται από τα κοιτάσματα τανταλίτη στην Αυστραλία, στη Βραζιλία, στον Καναδά, στη Νιγηρία και στο Κονγκό.
